Augustus Newhall Potter
b. 31 Aug 1836, d. 9 Mar 1918

Augustus Newhall Potter was born on August 31, 1836 in Rindge, New Hampshire.
His parents were Joseph Potter and Beulah (Stimpson) Fisher. He came to West
Brookfield as a boy to work in the shoe factory. He married Mary Sampson of
Brookfield, on March 28, 1857 in Ware. She was the daughter of Frederick S. Sampson
and Mary Adams. They had seven girls and three boys. He died on March 9,
1918, in West Brookfield and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery.

He enlisted on July 12, 1861, at Camp Scott, Worcester as a Private in F Co.,
15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the service of the United States.
His home of record at that time was West Brookfield.
He was Honorably discharged on January 10, 1862, with chronic bronchitis.
He enrolled again on July 28, 1862, and rejoined the 15th MVI.

Wounded in action 11/27/1863 at Mine Run, VA (arm wd)
Taken prisoner 6/22/1864 at Petersburg, VA

Active service terminated as Private, Paroled Prisoner, U.S. Volunteer, on
7/28/1864 at Worcester, MA., by reason of having been Honorably mustered out of the service.

He returned to West Brookfield where he and his family resided. He was a charter member of the GAR Post #160 (Alanson Hamilton) of West Brookfield.
