Highlights in History for the month of September

September 1, 1675,  The Wampanoag and Nipmuc Indians attack the Connecticut River settlements of Deerfield and Hadley in Massachusetts. The Deerfield settlers are to suffer two more such attacks on September 12 and 18.

September 22, 1776,  Nathan Hale was hanged as a spy by the British during the Revolutionary War.

September 28, 1781,  American forces in the Revolutionary War, backed by a French fleet, began their siege of Yorktown, VA

September 14, 1814,  Francis Scott Key  was inspired to write his poem "The Star-Spangled Banner" after witnessing how Fort McHenry in Maryland had endured British bombardment during the War of 1812.

September 1, 1939,  World War II began as Nazi Germany invaded Poland.
